Automatic Drawings: Highlights from the Book
Maria labels her artwork “automatic drawing,” although there are many terms that can be applied to this form of art distinguished by the artist allowing her arm and fingers to move without conscious direction. Surrealistic art, spontaneous art, intuitive art, expressionistic art, channeled art, and Touch Drawing are some of the disciplines and techniques where this type of free-form creative expression occurs.

Maria’s first automatic drawing of one of Louise’s poems, “Housekeeping Lessons for a Young Daughter.” In this poem, Louise wants her daughter to know that for every piece of household furniture, a tree has made a sacrifice.
